RSS is an exciting new technology which lets you collate and access a constantly updating stream of material in a simple and ingenious way. An RSS file is a file containing headlines and descriptions of specific information. While the majority of RSS feeds currently contain news headlines or breaking information the long term uses of RSS are broad. Consumers use RSS readers and news aggregators to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one centralized program or location. Content viewed in the RSS reader or news aggregator is known as an RSS feed. Whilst it is not difficult to subscribe to a feed instead of having to laboriously navigate to the latest news sites, and then have to install a small program (the RSS reader program) which collects the headlines and downloads them to your computer, we have done the work for you, by providing separate pages within the community web site that does all the conversion of feeds into a form that is online for you. These feeds are updated at regular intervals some more frequent than others and every time a new story is posted on the source site, its headline appears in the RSS page and you can then decide whether you want to click on the headline link and read the whole story or skim to the rest just as you would in a newspaper. There are now thousands of organisations producing RSS feeds. The BBC currently has 68 and it is growing but please feel free to contact us to suggest any additional rss resources or rss categories. |
